Hi all,
I could do with some advice.
I’ve got 2 leather corals that have grown enormous over the last few years and are taking over my aquarium.
I have divided the original one many years ago and I think they are both now attached to multiple large pieces of live rock so difficult to remove.
I believe they oooze into the water when cut so unsure what to do.
Should have done it years ago when they were smaller but didn’t!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

Can’t help with the cutting advice I’m afraid, personal preference would be to leave them, they look quality.

Thanks, they do look fabulous but are taking over and shading other corals.
Better picture with the lights on.

When cut they release toxins that can inhibit other corals. This seems to mainly affect SPS though.
If you decide to cut make sure the knife is sharp so you get a clean and quick cut. I have done it previously and advise then was to cut an outer ring off the toadstool. The cut off ring you can then cut into small pieces and superglue to frag plugs. I didn’t have many problems but have mainly soft corals

Hi looking for advice on what could inhibit toadstool corals and Joshua tree coral from opening its polyps? (if that’s the right term in their case?)
Tank set up is approaching  5yrs  old, other than this issue it’s been up and running happily in current position for 2yrs .

If you’re careful enough and don’t mind the gentle approach you should be able to slowly but gently prize them from any adjoining rocks which would enable freedom to remove and cut to new sizes if that’s what you want to. do .
If I could get to the stage of it being free from adjoining rocks I’d probably be inclined to remove it from the tank , cut it in half quick dip with reef dip of some sort , replace biggest back to original position and glue the off cuts to a new piece of rock and position them where you like or even sell them on if you wish to .
Just my thought to it .
Good luck what you decide to do ,
Very nice though

I'd put my money on the anemone's around the base irritating the toadstools. Try separating them.

Try cutting a smaller chunk off. Add carbon to soak up toxins. If all goes well, cut another chunk off. You can sell off the frags too.
