Out of curiosity, what kind of professions do the guys on here have?

I'm a programmer aka software/web developer.

No way? You seem too young. I've always seen that as an older chap's profession... Private hire or black cab?

Yeah I'm one of the youngest I guess @25.
Its a family business so I was always destined to drive a cab.
We are hackney carriages, so like a black cab in the way that people can flag us down, yet we have a regular vehicle. A Mercedes viano actually, which is rather versatile.
Thats why I'm usually up late at the weekend ;)

Mike, could have been an insulation installer with a job title like mine.
If you're going all PC the I should be called a draughts person.  But my insists we are actually called steel detailers.
I might be back....

I didn't know you could flag any cab down other than black cabs!

Each licencing council is different. In big city's all the private hire ones tend to be pre-book only. We are just a large town so we can be commissioned from anywhere in the district plus from the ranks obviously.

Ah, yeah, in Manchester, they're either black cabs or they're not. The ones that aren't say "Not insured unless booked through operator", to stop people trying to get in when the car is parked up, etc...

Yeah it does vary. We dont really have black cabs round here. I'm not sure I would want to drive a black cab anyway. They are a bit impersonal with there plastic screens and locking doors.
