All very simple from my side. Clicked to sign up. Ticked the box for recurring. It bounced me out to PayPal. Signed in, clicked the buttons as normal, done. Got emails from PayPal and Marine Fishkeeping confirming it all.

Did you have/see an option for gift rather than goods/service?

Maybe that wouldn’t be allowed given it’s clearly set up as a subscription to something that obviously then isn’t family/friend. Because the PayPal fees are annoying, from the £2 subscription, only £1.64 comes through.

Taking 36p out of 2 quid seems a bit excessive. I know PayPal are providing a service and all but still.  :umhum:

Thought as much.  :o

It’s fair given they’ve provided a service, but at the same time we’re told a portion of that fee is for a kind of insurance incase there’s a dispute and they need to provide buyer protection, but in our case a donation is never going to need that.

I think there is a donation specific PayPal channel, but you need a registered charity number for it.

It does seem a big percentage! Any other services we could use? I guess with enough people, it won't matter much. Just one or two more than we might have needed if we got all of the money directly.

Paypal is the only payment gateway integrated with the subscription system built into the forum. Most regular donations have always had money taken off too, it seems cheeky to ask folk to tick the gift/family option, but makes sense for everyone involved at ReefBase end, they wanna donate to the forum, and would rather all their money go to the forum than PayPal, but the default is obviously the goods/services option.

Since we've not had a donation since July, can anyone who can, subscribe either as a one off or recurring (the option is presented in PayPal) monthly. It's just £2 a month, but that's before PayPal take their fee, so we only actually get £1.64 of it.

Here's the link to your subscriptions page: https://reefbase.co.uk/profile/?area=subscriptions

Or just the regular donate button to donate any other amount less or more. There's also the option for gift/friend family, whatever it's called where PayPal don't take any cut of it, that way all your donation comes to the forum fund.

Thanks.

The subscription came out my side this month, so that seems to work.

Come on, who else is willing to sign up to £2 a month?

@HK_Fuey Yep, received the notification from Paypal earlier today, saying £2 received from you, but obviously only £1.64 of it comes my way after the fees. Thanks.  :glad:

It's been getting on 5 months since the last donation (other than @HK_Fuey 's last couple of subscription donations bringing in £3.28).

It's all coming out of my pocket guys, I know it's a hard sell for just a naff old forum on the internet that's hardly bustling with activity, but it really can't continue with me being out of pocket month on month.

Maybe time for a difficult decision mate, hope I don’t offend anyone… yet the forum has really dried up of late… It will be a shame, yet you can’t be expected to fund it evermore.

It is seeming that way… I don’t think anyone’s in a position to be offended. I can’t expect people to fund it forever and I can’t either.

If the forum really has dried up then it’s pointless anyway. It seems with all the talk of the forum closing of late people are either jumping ship, not willing to put effort into posting here, likely both.

It’ll be such a shame, but everyone’s tried their best over the years and I can’t expect any more from anyone.  :umhum:

It's a good ge shame, but I tend to agree. Maybe if Facebook and X start charging, people will flood back, but it does seem doomed right now.

Yep, it doesn't seem like it's ever going to recover and is an ever spiralling downward struggle.
