Tis a good idea, I'm all about openness and honesty and aren't after ever making any money from this place, but also don't want to imply an obligation on members to donate.

I am really humbled by everyone's efforts to get the donate facility more prominent and other systems in place to encourage donations.  :glad: Something like that would imply it's totally member funded and might disappear if members don't donate, which isn't the case.

Where is that from btw? If they're member funded, I'd be keen to take a look at how they're doing things generally..  :glad:

It does say towards server fund so in my mind it doesn't imply its member funded.
It is turbo minis.co.uk

If you enjoy the forum then your happy to help :)

I guess if you got to many donations you could close it and say funded until such a date.

It all averages out, a rush of donations covers the slump when they dry up completely.

That site does say (currently) £10 / £100 per month, so your donation counts towards the total, so suggests the total is £100 per month. You're right, a similar system here wouldn't have to mention any running costs... It's a great suggestion, but for now, with our current size, the costs just aren't enough to really need to be crowdfunded.  If that ever changed, the members would be the first to know, If there's ever a concern I'd just drop this place as it's costing money, it'd just never happen. On that site, it's a bit too prominent for my liking. Feels like it's dangling an obligation in members faces.

The issue with closing it when enough money has come in, is that if someone is feeling like donating, but sees it's closed or not needed, then they won't feel their donation will make a difference, then when it is open, it's an implied obligation. It's far better being as completely optional as it is now, to be honest. Call me strange... Many people have.

I agree Mike, best to leave it as optional :) nice to see members thinking of ideas and showing how much they like the forum though :)

I'm not sure how it cost £100 I know it has a lot more members but not much movement and it's so outdated on uploading pics etc.

I see your point about closing it, like you say if that can't donate at that point then they might not later either.

Just a thought and good to through a few ideas around now and again ;)

After talking about I went to donate but couldn't find the button to, logged on my laptop and there it was, it's almost like there's no space to display the donate button or recent pictures on a iPhone so it misses that colum out @Mike

Yeah, the left column gets dropped when browsing on a small device.

I've moved that donate block over to the right column, it's underneath recent topics, and above reefing news.  ;)

I didn't want to say, but yeah, that does seem a lot for a forum of it's activity. Number of members and posts matters little, that only takes up database i.e disk space and that's cheap. Activity and traffic is what costs as you need a more powerful server with more memory etc to keep up.

Also the button is moved to the right, so it'll show on phones now, and there's also this little page I set up. It just has the button on it and nothing else, so should be much more accessible.
