Well... We are on a roll...
Two more donations today.
The donations in the last week have us covered for the next 3 months roughly. I'm honestly humbled.
Pack it in for a bit now or I'll have to get a registered charity number or something.
Regarding costs, its not a secret, but it varies based on usage.
We're now hosted on Google Cloud Compute platform.
Those who've been here a while will remember downtime nightmares with various other hosts, using dedicated servers and VPSs, with several moves to other providers.
We've not had any downtime since moving to the GCC platform (Google know how to keep servers online...), and it's been consistently perfect, and far cheaper than the previous dedicated servers we used. It does mean the cost varies based on usage. It used to cost nearing £90 a month to run the forum, and I've now got it down to between £20 and £25 depending on how busy the server is. That doesn't directly correlate with forum activity, as spam bots, hackers, etc trying to brute force passwords and general web noise (there's a lot of it) also costs, as it increases CPU usage, including search engine crawlers. We use a CDN (content delivery network) to protect us from a lot of threats, like known spammers, bots, and DDOS attacks, and it also serves some static content that doesn't change, like the background image, and other images, JS and CSS files etc., to save us bandwidth, that also reduces costs.
So the forum, now more than ever is self sufficient. Money in the meter now covers us to the middle of August.
