Common Name Stomatella snail
Scientific ID Stomatella varia
Good/Bad Good

Description
Stomatella snails look like a cross between a slug and a snail.  Their shell is fairly flat and looks a little like a fingernail .  They are a few colours of stomatella , mottled brown / green , black , grey or other colours in between , which is where their species name of 'varia' comes from .  They grow to around 3/4? in length.  Stomatella are mostly nocturnal and can move quite quickly (for a snail) to avoid predators .  They can also break off the rear portion of their foot to distract Predators while they make their getaway . As they don’t have much shell , predatory animals in the tank such as hermit crabs , predatory shrimps  can eat them .
Stomatella are herbivores and feed upon algae and micro algaes in the tank so are generally looked at as a good member of the CUC and reef safe .
Stomatella will reproduce in the tank but don’t seem to reach nuisance levels .

Thanks:

Might it be a good idea to include a link to a Google Images result for these? That way users can click the link and see loads of other images, some of which might more closely match what they see in their tank?

Hi Mike , Yes that's great , some of my pics are a little limited or poor quality , just wasn't sure about individual pics as some are copyrighted but should be fine to display Google images .

We're not claiming they're our own work, and aren't profiting from it so we're ok. Besides just linking to a google search doesn't even step on anyone's hotlinking toes.
