Glass, Rock, Tube, or Glass Rose anemones Scientific ID
Aiptasia are small light brown semi transparent anemones that grown upto 2" tall with tenticles upto 1.5" long with a powerful sting which they are able to sting neighbouring corals , passing invertebrates or fish , injuring or killing them .
They are photosynthetic but will also eat small meaty foods which it is able to catch with its tenticles .
Aiptasia anemones reproduce through the process known as pedal or basal laceration , this occurs when baby anemones develop from small bits of tissue left behind as the anemone wanders around or when the anemone is damaged or torn any tissue removed will also develop into a baby anemone . This allows the Aiptasia anemone to reproduce quite quickly .
There are various ways to kill , remove and control Aiptasia , through predators such as peppermint shrimp , chemically by injecting or feeding with various bought treatments , boiling water , vinegar , kalk , lemon juice .
Aiptasia anemones are sometimes confused with Majano anemones , the Majano anemone has much stubbier tenticles compared to Aiptasia which has longer more slender tenticles. Aiptasia are also always a translucent brown colour while Majano more often have a green colouration .
