Have you a photo (bottom up) looking at the input for the Skimmer? Still think if you elongate that input it would save you a lot of hassle, plus you know you could modify it further to surface skim

The candy cane have great potential pic below befor they was moved from the main tank.
Also with the Duncan and candy cane I use to turn all flow off and squirt a bit of frozen food over them about twice a week.
The Duncan will take the food near enough straight away the candy cane will take aboutb15-30 minutes, but found they grew faster when fed.
