Yep top it but then don't add any more for a couple of days to let it respond

I added ammonia to 1 -1.5ppm last night and this afternoon it was undetectable and now nitrite is undetectable too.

Nitrates have been off the chart (possibly because I have dosed the tank with 2 different brands of bacteria and starter in the last few weeks!). I have done an 80% water change this evening and nitrates have come down to 25ppm 'ish. A LFS has macro algee for me so I will add that and get the lights going to try and get the nitrates even lower.

I'm going to re dose ammonia tonight and if it's gone tomorrow evening I guess I'm done!

Have you tested it?

Did you decide on what lighting you'll be using for your algae ?

I have put the macro algae in the DT for now because it has LED's already setup. I was going to put a fitting in the sump to take a GU10 15watt which should give good par. I'm very open to suggestions if anyone knows a cost effective way of lighting the sump/cabinate.

The LFS also told me a small CUC would be ok at this stage so I have one nassarius snail and one turbo snail.

Ammonia and Nitite both dropped to 0 again within 24 hours but despite the big water change I did, nitrates are creeping up again. I'm guessing it's the ammonia I'm dosing to check that the tank is cycled.

I would say it's cycled then
Yes the nitrate will raise until you have your algae going

Tim, Thanks for the advice on Dr Tims one and only. I'm sure it is the reason my tank cycled so fast. It didn't seem to be doing much with Waterlife products.

I went to the LFS this morning before I re tested the water to see if it could drop 1ppm 2 days in a row. I took a chance on a couple of snails but didn't get any fish. I'm regretting it now!

After acclimation and a night with all the lights off I woke up to two happy clown fish. 😊

My wife has named them Vincent and Flavia because they are the same colour as the strictly come dancing cast. 🙄

Apologies for the rubbish pictures but I only have my iPhone to work with!

Thanks:

Thanks, they are tank bred and have settled in quickly it seems. They explore the whole tank during the day but at night they stay in one corner near the surface next to the power head. They aren't showing any sign of gulping so I don't think they are close to the top because of low O2. Nutrients are all nice and low too.

They will pick something to host them, and as often as not, it's a bit of equipment.  They're nuts.  My first pair were hosted by my return outlet.

It's the weekend and I plan to go and get the LED light from the sorting office and set up my macro algae fuge.

I have bought a very small Eheim compact pump which tumbles the chaeto nicely. I have had to light it with a standard fluorescent for the last few days but it has grown in the last 3 days so hope it will be an even better nitrate trap once the super duper 6500k 13watt LED for plant growth is fitted. I will post pics once it's done.

This is the LED which reefers online have said is a relatively cheap but powerful light specifically for plant growth.
