i was planning on doing 5l a day everyday or is it best 2 do 2 or 3 big changes?
Def best to do fewer large changes.  You'll reduce nutrients faster that way.

So its been a while, thought ide do an update on my build thread. this picture was from day 1 of setup..... this is the tank today.. so its been a long slow proccess but as many will have told me "nothing good happens quick in marines" so im happy with the progress.
ive done alot that i shouldnt and im not doing plenty of things that i should! but thats the way i like it, learning from my own mistakes.

a few things have changed.. the tank now has an egg crate top after the yellow wrasse going for a walk.  i resisted toping this tank as i liked the open look, and as ide had the wrasse for a yr with no signs of jumping i thought ide be safe. so we now have 2 new additions a replacement mate for the female common clown.. her old mate managed to find a way out of the overflows!
and a cardinal the classic looking ones were a fish ive always liked so altho ive been told they are dull. which i must admit i do agree. but ive always liked them

the standard 3x overflows with 1 return that the tank was setup with has been replaced after it continually created an air lock which would gurgle like crazy at 4 in the morning!
So after a lot of guidance from fellow forum friends this was what it became a  syphon a skim and an emergency drain. mind the photo bomb from the boss!

sumps growing plenty af algae and huge amouts of life crawling about.  ive accidently ended up with an upflow scrubber in the baffles which works well to remove nutrient easily.. i just drag it out with a toothbrush once a week : ) still just running without a skimmer or any reactors. its taken a while to balance and for the setup to work but it seems to be winning. the DT still has an amount of algae in it but i was never expecting or wanting it to be a show home exscuse the phone picture quality

Very nice Gareth.

I dont think Banghi are dull, thier amazingly marked and somewhat Art Deco :D
Do not mock the snake because it has no horns. For who is to say that one day it may become a dragon,as one just man may become an army...Water Margin.

yeah before the days of nemo the cardinals for me were what i considered the 'marine' fish. but it does just sit rocking in the same spots for hrs so not exactly full of personality like a goby or clown

territory is a bit of a premium in my tank unfortunately. ide of loved to go for a mating pair but will have to settle for just 1 till i upgrade : )

Massive difference from day one to now. Is the algae in the DT an issue, or is that dying back?

yeah it went thro some crappy stages but its under control.. i do have patches of byprosis that ive not tackled yet.. im really trying to do as little as possible and just hope for the best? so far so good lol
ive noticed improved coral growth recently so im hoping this is helping to use up the nutrients

If it's reducing, then just keep doing what you're doing.

New year coming and its been a while since ive updated my build thread.
Its been 2 yrs since i started this cheapo diy setup and altho its been ups and downs im happy with the results so far......
INFO:
expected cappacity 140L actual around 100L.
Ehiem 1200 return
160w Chinese bb
65w red/blue sump light
aps2000 power head
RW8 power head
and thats the lot! still not running reactors, dosers, skimmers, ats.
This is still a all natural setup as far as it can be.
My routine consists of
0 testing 0 dosing 6 weekly 30% w/c.
Im not gonna lie im lazy as hell and inconsistent at best.
I found myself causing more trouble than good when i made an effort to mess about so i stopped and leave nature to do its work for me : )
Now many hardcore reefers will have kittens and pick out all the bad points from the photos to come, but ive never wanted to control my mini habbitat or create a picture perfect show tank.
My water is and always has been crystal clear and my sand is still white. yes yes i have algae but so does the ocean.
Some pics to follow....
