Starting to feel like a Reefer!

Ok so it’s been awhile since my last update, basically I’ve just been waiting for my Coral QT Tank to cycle which took longer than expected, only about a month but as I seeded it with some media from the DT I expected it to be quicker but just had to be patient.

My DT is going well, everything’s ticking along nicely, I’ve had a little trouble with the Clownfish Fighting on and off but nothing to bad touch wood and most of the time they are hanging out nicely together.
They’ve really coloured up well and the Black bands on their fins have also thickened up so they look really healthy and also seem to be enjoying the Tank, swimming all around it and not sticking to one place.
I’ve had a short layer of GHA on some of the Rock for about 6 weeks now, I added some Chemi Pure Ellite about a month ago, I also cut back on feeding and it’s basically just stayed the same length since then, some has even receded back so it looks like it’s under control for now, hopefully when I get the Coral in soon and there is something to compete against the Algae for Nutrients it will recede even further, the Clownfish do like to pull at it and eat it though which is nice to watch and it gives them something to do and a bit more of a varied diet.
I’ve got hardly any CUC, still only one Hermit Crab and two Nas Snails so can always add more if it does start to become a problem.
There’s also a nice population of what I think are Copepods in the Tank now, not sure how they got in as I’ve not introduced any Coral yet but I can see them on the glass when I have the Blue lights on and look at a certain angle, looks like lots of different sized white dots moving around and the Clowns swim by and pick off the bigger ones.

Anyway so the Coral QT Tank has been cycled for a couple of weeks and I finally got my first Corals in on Wednesday!
I ordered them from Jbsmarines and I brought....
3 Heads of Witches Cauldron with a single Baby Blue Head Zoa mixed in.
3 Heads of Epacker Zoas.
3 separate single Head Zoas in a pack.
A fluorescent Green Montipora Plate about an inch by half inch.
A Cluster of Alien Eye Palythoas.
A what looked like pretty a poor Frag of GSP but it was all I could find as a lot of Coral was getting snapped up so just went with it.
And I received a free what I’m pretty sure is a Birdsnest.

So I floated the bags when I received them to bring them to temp.
I’d already planed to take the Corals off their Plugs, dip them in Coral RX then into another container of Tank water to rinse, then Glue them to my own LR Ruble from my Tanks to reduce the chances of any pests getting in.
That went well, they all came of very easily! The Alien Eyes were scattered on Rock so I just left them as I didn’t want to break them up.
After gluing them I rinsed again and placed them on some Eggcreate on the bottom of the QT Tank, I also only put Actinic Lighting on for that day.
The Epackers, one of the single head Zoas, the Witches Cauldren and Babyblue and the Birdsnest all open up within an hour or so and all look great! Nice and colourful and really glow vibrantly under the Blue Lights.
The Birdsnest looks really great! It’s fully extended and I’m glad they sent it as I wouldn’t have tried an SPS this early so I just hope it does well.
The GSP didn’t start opening until the next day and isn’t very Green at all, more of a brown but does have Florescent Green Mouths and hints of Green on the tips so it may colour up but if not it still adds a nice bit of flow and I like it.
The Alien Eyes are only just starting to open now a few days later and they haven’t got much colour to them really, a hint of Green and the picture shows them as Blue, I’m not even sure they are the right Coral they look so different.
Two of the Single Head Zoas haven’t opened yet, they are still there and the flesh glows but haven’t opened so I’ll try changing their position in the Tank if they don’t open soon.
Lastly the Montipora Plate looks really nice! Bright Florescent Green and doing well so far.
I’m planing on dipping them all again after a week in the QT, then back in for another week and if I don’t see any pests or anything wrong with them I’ll give them one more dip and into the DT.

Feels really good to finally have some Coral and can’t wait to get it in the Main Tank!
Hope everyone’s doing well and staying safe.
Happy Reefing!

It was a little tricky getting Pics as I can only get them straight on as the glass puts it out of focus if from an angle so I couldn’t get all of them yet but here’s the few I could get....

1, GSP.
2/3, Witches Cauldron with Babyblue Zoa.
4, Birdsnest (I think?)
5, Montipora Plate.
6, Epackers (New Head forming).

Kevh,
Nice one mate!
I’ve had a couple of Diotom blooms now that really Browned up the Tank but they went over a little time so don’t worry.

So I’ve gotten the Corals over to the DT now, it wasn’t all smooth sailing though the QT but nothing major.
The first week went fine, no problems at all and everything except the 2 single head Zoas had opened up and I was even getting growth from a couple! At the first week mark I did my second dip and that also went fine but later that night as I shut the Lights off I noticed the water seemed just a little cloudy, the next day it was even more so, so I did some tests and nothing was off, I was mainly worried about Ammonia but it was 0ppm. I did remember from some reading I’d done before getting the Tank that you can get Bacterial blooms that can make the water cloudy and as all the Coral, even the Birdsnest was all open and extended I thought that was probably what it was so left it to see if it would sort itself. The only thing I did do was add a little carbon pack I had just in case there was anything contaminating the water.
After a couple of days it was still cloudy but everything was still open and looking good except the GSP which looked like it was struggling a little, I thought it may be not getting enough light through the haze so took the risk putting it over to the main display as it had already been dipped twice and I’d seen no evidence of any pests on any of the Coral for about 10 days or so now. Once in the DT it extended fully and is growing like wildfire already! (I’ll mention the growth shortly as I’m really pleased and surprised how quickly a couple of them are growing). At the 2 week mark I decided to get a few more in so was going to dip the following day and put all except the 3 Witches Cauldron and single Baybyblue Zoa that had been a little hit and miss as to weather or not they would open.
The following day came and the QT Tank was crystal clear! Looks like my suspicions were correct and it was a BBloom and it just sorted itself out. I decided to still dip and get the Coral in though and it all went well, everything looked a look better under the Fluval Lights and all opened up nicely so was well pleased!

Now I’d read Hermit Crabs could be a bit of a pain knocking Frags over but this single Hermit I have was the biggest pain he could possibly be! Just wouldn’t leave the Corals alone and it became so annoying after a few days I put him over to the QT until everything’s settled in.
Right now I’ve moved most up and onto the Rock work where I want it, nothings glued down but I glued some of them onto bigger bits of LR and slotted them into crevices so they’re secure but can be removed if needed.

I’ll just say a little about the growth but leave that for next update as I’m going to take some pics a couple of weeks apart to show the change. The GSP is growing like mad! I’d heard they can become invasive so have it on a piece of LR on the Sand but I’ve also heard it can take awhile to get going so wasn’t expecting much for a while but it already has grown a significant amount in just the last couple of weeks, you can see the Mat spreading out pretty much by the day and there must be at least 10 new heads sprouted and a good 7 or 8 little dots where others are coming. I’m going to let it grow off onto a bigger separate Rock but make sure to keep it isolated from the main structure.

My Epackers have fully formed a new Head so up to 4, no signs of anymore yet but hoping for some.

The Birdsnest I received as a freebie which was cool as I wouldn’t have brought one this early on but it’s growing really well! There is a big bump now growing off one of the 2 main stems and another 4 little spikes growing also, you can see the difference in it every few days and it really adds a nice look to the Tank. I’ve placed it about 2 3rds up and it’s not getting great flow really but is always fully extended so looks happy there, occasionally I give it a light blow with the Turkey Baster just to clear any debris that may be on it.

So, so far so good.I do have some Alien Eye Pailies in there which have coloured up nicely and look like there’s 2 new Heads growing, also 2 Heads of Witches Caldron that survived that I’ll try and capture soon, unfortunately I lost the single Babyblue and single WC attached to that Frag for some reason and also 2 of the single Head Zoas I got never opened and after some time melted away in the QT.

Few Pics I took about a week ago....

1, Epackers.
2, Birdsnest (I think).
3, Monti Cap.
4, Babyblue.
5, GSP.

This is a post I forgot to put up for some reason from 20th of May 2020.

Had my first real panic in the Tank the last few weeks!
I’ve had a little GHA for a few months now, only short and not really been a problem but a couple of months ago it looked as though it may be spreading so I decided to put a small bag of Chemi Pure Elite in the Sump, cut down the amount of Pellets feed each day and reduced the feeding of Mysis Shrimp to every Four days instead of Three. I was a little worried about stripping out to many nutrients so at first kept an eye on it.

After a couple of weeks or so the Algae had receded quite a bit and I noticed these small, while fluffy tufts which I assumed were the GHA dying off so carried on, I stoped checking the Nitrate and Phosphate as I thought, I could still see the Algae hadn’t completely gone so there must still be some in the water.
I then started noticing the White fluffy Algae turning Brown with a few bubbles. This time though as I’d only just added the Coral, assumed it was a little Diatom mixing in with it as I’d moved over some Live Rock with the Coral from the QT and also used some Glue to mount them so thought some Silicate must have gotten in and started a small Diotom bloom.
After another couple of weeks though there were a lot of slimy, strings coming off this now pretty grim looking Algae and bubbles trapped inside looking very much like the dreaded Dino!

I did some tests and had no detectable Nitrate or Phosphate so decided to take out the CPE and replaced it with just a small bag of Carbon, just in case there were any toxins being released into the water. I upped my daily feedings of Pellets and also started feeding Mysis every Two days, I put back water changes to once every Two weeks and also started changing the Filter Floss a little less regularly, lastly I scrubbed off the Rock with an old Toothbrush and siphoned out as much brown, stringy stuff as I could.
Basically I wanted to try and bring the Nitrates back up and get some GHA back to out compete the potential Dino or whatever other horrible looking stuff this was as this was speeding much faster the the GHA ever had!
I also had a little Cyno on the Sandbed, only in very low flow areas, under crevices of Rock so knew my Nutrients were very low.
Doing all this at once did cloudy the water somewhat! I’ve always had crystal clear water from day one in the DT even before running any Carbon so it was a bit of a blow seeing it looking all murky, but as all Corals except the GSP (which as mentioned later can be a bit temperamental) were open fully I wasn’t to concerned and just carried on with it.

This is now about a month on and I’m happy to say it seems to have done the trick! (Touch wood), I’m not completely out the Woods yet as I now have some GHA back to deal with but no more stringy, Brown stuff!
The small White tufts which it seemed to all stem from are still there but receded back a lot, they have been reducing as the GHA made a come back and the remaining ones have turned a bright Purple, they actually look pretty cool but hopefully it’s indicating them dying off.
I still have a couple of small patches of Cyano but less than before and it doesn’t seem to be an issue (touch wood), I have a Power Head that I can put in for increased flow at some point though if it starts to become one.
I’m now cutting back again on Nutrients going into the Tank, basically doing what I was doing before but keeping the CPE out and keeping an eye on the GHA, I’m hoping to keep it at bay but not completely eradicate it so I can keep some sort of balance in the Tank and not make it to clean.

Apart from that though my Fish and Coral are doing great!
Getting some great growth on the Birds-Nest still.
GSP has over doubled in size and almost covered the Rock I put it on.
The GSP though, even with the great growth sometimes just decides to not come out for a day or Two, at first I was a bit worried about water quality when it did this but now it seems to be after I feed Mysis and it gets some, it then stays closed the next day like it doesn’t need to feed that day or something.

The single Head BabyBlue Zoa is growing a new Head! It’s just starting to open and I can see the Fluorescence under the Actinic Lighting, I’m really pleased with this as it’s such a nice looking Zoa, especially under the Blue Lights and it’s a really good size too.
Lastly I’m pretty sure my Epackers are also growing another Head, the Mat is definitely spreading and there’s a bump very similar to what first appeared on the BabyBlue so fingers crossed!

Really loving the Hobby so far! Even more so than expected.
Im going to try and make sure my Algae troubles are in check before adding anything new but the next Coral on the list is a Duncan, I want to place it right at the top (our Left) corner next to the high point to really add some good flow to the Tank.

Few pics....

1, Full Tank shot (GSP/BSP in a mood in this one).
2, Witches Cauldron.
3, Stylo (great growth on this!)
4, Alien Eye Pallys.

Received my coral this morning, came at 9am.
I’d heated a bucket of water to the QT temp and floated the bags for 20 mins then broke them off the plugs (little nervous doing this but went well) and dipped them in Coral RX for 8 minutes, there were a few Vermeted Snails on them so I scraped them off also then glued the Frags to some rock rubble I had from my QT.
I gave them a good rinse in some tank water then popped them in the QT tank and after about 20 mins the Hammer was opening, I had to move it around a little as in my 5 gallon QT it was a little tricky to get a nice low flow but I’m happy with where it is now and it’s fully extended! The Duncan started to open after about 10 mins and is now also fully extended so well pleased!
The colours on both coral are beautiful, the blue heads on the blue tipped Hammer against the neon green stems are striking and the Duncan looks amazing too!

I received a yellow filter today so can hopefully get some nice pics of the fluorescence under the actinic lighting, i’ll put some pics up later if it works out.
Can’t wait to get them in the DT!

Thanks:

Thanks ajm!
At first I wasn’t sure if a QT was overkill for a small nano like the Fluval Evo but so glad I did, not only for the piece of mind when getting new coral but also as a space I can put a Hermit that’s being a pain, or when my Clowns were fighting I knew if needed I could stick one in there.
I leave it up and running without the lights on, then just add about 2ppm Ammonia a few days before adding new coral and it deals with it nicely.

Ok so been a really good day today! Coral are looking great and my new filter is also spot on! Been messing with it and well impressed! Only £5,99 on eBay and what a difference.

here’s a couple of pics....

The new coral are both doing well in QT, had a slight bacterial bloom which made the water a little cloudy but the same thing happed last time so wasn’t to concerned as long as the coral stayed extended and looking healthy.
The Duncan is much bigger than expected and will add so much to the DT! They’ve both definitely brightened up the QT that’s for sure.

Coral in QT.

Got the new coral in the DT now, been in a few days and looking good.
The Duncan’s slightly in the shade under the rock as I couldn’t find to many places where the flow was right on the sand but it seems happy there. The Hammer I’ve had to place around the back of the Tank for the same reason but when acclimated to the lights I’ll try and find a better spot a little higher on the rock where I can see it better.

Tank pics....
