Ratvan,
Ha, will do mate.

ajm83,
Definitely lovely to look at, I’m really enjoying having a little life in the Tank!
Something I’ve already found out is they have flatter bodies than your normal Hermit Crab so need a specific type of Shell.
I had scattered some normal Shells that I’d picked up from my local Beach and then boiled but apparently they only use Cone Shells (like Conch type Shells).
I found some various sized Magnus Cone Shells on ebay that look right so just placed an order yesterday.

Cheers mate,
That’s another bonus about Reefing, I’ve dabbled in Photography on and off for a few years and now with the Tank, I don’t even have to leave the house to get some nice pics, result!

Thanks:

Picking up my first Fish tomorrow!
Two young Osellaris Clownfish (original I know), I was going to buy them Saturday but with with the Storm coming and now here, thought I’d hold of till Monday just in case I get a power cut or something and didn’t want to be messing with the Tank with new Fish.

Looking forward to it though so I’ll post a update tomorrow.

Excellent news mate they're going to be great in the evo, you can't go wrong with clowns, I know they're common as muck but I wouldn't have a saltwater tank without one, they're always active aswell, I only have one but I wish I'd got a pair

Haha yeah, of all the Fish you can get Clowns seem to be by far the one on everybody’s radar and I’ve never even seen Finding Nemo!

Send in the Clowns!

10/2/2020.
Picked up my Clowns today, I hadn’t really had a great look at them, only a check over to see they looked good and healthy, apparently they’ve been QTd for 6 weeks before entering the Store (this Shop has better Salinity levels also 1.025) and as they’re my first and probably only Fish I took the risk and just brought them up to Temp, drip acclimated them for about 35 minutes and put them in the Tank.
Only when putting them in and having a good look I realised just how small they were (Makes the Tank look massive!)
They’re young, only about an inch long and nearly as small as the Hermit Crabs.
Apart from when I checked these over a few days ago and a few quick glances at Clowns while in the LFS I’ve never really seen Clownfish apart from online and must say in real life they look so much better!
They had 6 in the Tank and I don’t think they’re old enough to have become one sex or the other yet but one is a little bigger than the other and you can already tell it’s going to be the dominant one, they swim around together quite a bit (not all the time) but now and again it goes to give the other one a little nip, normally the smaller one avoids it and it doesn’t seem scared in any way, I did see the more aggressive one grab it once though and give it a little shake which was a little concerning but hopefully it’s just part of establishing the pecking order.

I’ve kept the Lights off for today and just have ambient Lightning from the Room, I wasn’t going to feed them on the first day to let them settle in but they were swimming around quite happily in the water column, not hiding away at all and were going for any little bubble or whatever drifted past so I just dropped in a few Formular 2 Pellets one by one through the Feeding hole and they were both snatching them up before they hit the bottom.
So....so far so good!I’ll post some Pics up when I get the Lights back on.

There’s one thing I’m a little worried about, my Hermit Crabs for the last 2 or 3 days have just been sitting in the same place not really moving, they’ve been pretty active since having them (though I’ve not had them very long) so hope they’re ok, one of them went docile first then the other a day or 2 later.
I can see their Antennae moving and they have their Legs hanging out sometimes so I know they’re not dead but their not acting like they were.
They’ve been feed quite well so I’m hoping they’re just getting ready to Molt and are not slipping away for some reason.
The Snails are doing fine so fingers crossed.

————————

11/2/2020.
Clowns are doing great!
One slept vertically up against the corner of the Tank in a lower flow area, the other slightly bigger one tried to join it a few times but couldn’t seem to keep itself there as well so found another spot to sleep in. When I saw them early morning though it had figured it out and both were sleeping together which was nice to see.
I gave them some more Formula 2 Pellets today and they took them straightaway! I’ll feed them a little Mysis tomorrow and see how they like that.
They’ve been exploring the Tank much more, yesterday they pretty much stayed at one side near the glass but today they were going through the cave in the Rocks and swimming around all over.
The bigger one has also been much friendlier to the other and they seem to be getting on well.

Oh one of the Hermits did Molt!
When I looked in the Tank I could see the Claws and Legs all together on the Sand under where the Hermit’s Shell was so checked to see if I could still see it in it’s Shell and could just make out one of it’s legs moving a little so definitely a Molt and not dead Hermit.
Really pleased as I can be pretty sure now the other is doing the same and they’re not dying.
All in all a great couple of days for the Tank!

Here’s a couple of Pics of the new Clowns....

When I looked at my Tank this morning I noticed something along the top edge, one of my Nas Snails has laid Eggs!
They’re in pretty cool Fern like patterns just below the water line. From what I’ve read they don’t normally survive but still a nice little surprise and a bit of free Fish Food as the Clowns have picked a few off today.

Clowns are both doing well, feeding on Mysis and Formula 2 Pellets, I’ve ordered some New Life Spectrum Pellets also which should be coming tomorrow.
They’ve been sleeping at different ends of the Tank, one in each corner, tonight the slightly larger one kept charging the other more than usual and for the first time I saw the smaller one do the submissive, stuttering dancing thing they do, this happened quite a few times tonight and now they seem to be acting a little differently. Instead of running away when charged at like before the smaller one just bends its body a little, the other stops and they hang out together so looks like they may be starting to pair already? I’m not sure if they’re still to young and wouldn’t have thought it would happen this quickly but it’s starting to look that way, be a real result if so!

I’m going to start ordering my Coral QT Tank and bits very soon, only a 5 Gallon but really want to get that up and running next.

1,Eggs.
2,Managed to get a closer pic of Caesar.

Man down.

Some good news and some bad news.

The bad is I’ve had the first fatality in the Tank. One of the Hermits just hasn’t been right for a while now so I could see it coming, it went pretty docile about 12 days ago and finally gave up the Ghost yesterday. The other also went docile but for a much shorter period, then Molted and has been back to his old self for a few days now but this one just never properly recovered so I think it just had a bad Molt and died.
The surviving Hermit has changed his Shell for the first time today! I saw him do it which was pretty cool and the Shell is a definite upgrade to the last, a lot more jazzy so I’ve got a designer Hermit Crab strutting around the Tank now.

The good news is the Tank’s much cleaner over the last few days. After adding the Clowns my Rock turned very Brown very quickly, I wasn’t really worried as I thought it was just more of the ugly stage but decided to cut back on how much I was feeding just a little.
Pretty mad how such a small change can make such a big difference in a Tank this size as only a few days later the Rock and Sand are almost completely free of Brown and lovely and clean again!

Got my QT Tank set up today!
A small 5 gallon just for Coral, more of an observation Tank really as I’m going to try not to use any medication in it.
I’m using a dipping regime outside the Tank and just watch and wait until I’m happy the Corals are clean and ready for the DT.

Pretty pleased with it really, thought it might be a little loud as the HOB Filter was only about £12 but it’s nice and quiet and looks like it will do the job.
I’ve placed a little Rock that I had left over to give the Bacteria something to get into, I’m also adding a small bag of Seachems Matrix that’s been in the DT Sump for a little over a week now and I’ve got the Sponge from the HOB Filter inside the DT Sump seeding now.
I’m going to dose some Stability and Dr Tim’s Ammonia to try and get it cycled quickly, then get me first small Corals in there!

Cant wait!

That's a cool little tank man, glad you got the algae under control in the main tank, it is crazy how quick small changes can do something in this tank

If anyone needs hermit crab shells, my local beach has loads of whelk shells in different sizes. I boil for 10 mins in water then use a coral dip. Happy to give away for free by post.

Cheers Dusty.

I got some pretty nice Shells for the Hermits from the Beach at first (I live on the Essex coast) and boiled them but the Hermit’s didn’t use them.
I then found out Halloween Hermit’s only use Cone Shells as they have thiner bodies apparently so was a bit of a pain finding some the right size as we don’t get them over here.
I brought some off eBay but when they arrived they were massive! But this site sends them in different sizes from Nano to Large so I finally got what I needed.
