The intakes of those pumps should be too small for his exoskeleton to fit through, and crabs are really strong, so should have no trouble pulling himself away from it if he got pulled onto it.

Well the wee crab didn't make it , I found it in my skimmer today , it wasn't skimming right so stripped it and found it wedged in the pump intake  , on the bright side my skimmer is now beautifully clean after the strip down . When I eventually catch the other crab left in the tank it will definitely be too big for any of the intakes .
Also went to LFS today and picked up a nice size yellow tang , it's still trying to settle after being harassed by my existing stripped bristletooth and purple tangs .
The bristletooth has actually been the worse out the two which quite surprised me after everything I've read . I'll post a pic once settled .

Wow, must have been a small crab and large intake. I'd never see that coming!  :O

About the size of a twenty pence piece , I wouldn't have expected it to end up in the skimmer either , more the return pump .
I've a bigger one still to capture that definitely won't fit in either .

Hopefully everything will calm down a little today , the purple tang kept chasing the yellow a little before lights off , to the point the bristletooth tang got annoyed with it and attacked the purple instead ....
This morning the yellow is sitting in the corner , hopefully the balance will even out once settled  , the yellow is a bit bigger than the purple , so should be more than capable of defending itself .

I'm sure you have already considered it but I'm sure it's more of a last resort in a mature marine tank...

I kept cichlids for years and adding new fish can be really tough. I found changing the aquascape around helped a lot.

Yeah , I'd previously kept large cichlids for over 20 years , it can be pretty tough adding new fish to an established tank and rearranging can help but as you say not always practical in a reef compared to a FW setup , if it persists I'll pop the purple in the sump for the evening and allow the yellow to roam , sometimes I find netting the problem fish for a few mins can be enough to stress it a little for the day to give the other peace to find a refuge . Not necessarily the best method but it has worked for me in the past as a last resort .
Just now it's allowing it to be in the corner of the tank , but chases it back when it gets to come away , so it's a little progress but will probably be quite a slow process till the yellow fully settles too .

Little update , Yellow tang is settling in well now , the purple tang is still following it about the tank trying to push it about a little but lacking the initial aggression , the yellow just turns away from it and doesn't really seem too fussed . It's also been feeding well last couple of days too so all going well . :glad:

Further update , the yellow tang has now settled and not getting any further bother from the purple tang , its almost bordering on the complete opposite now , all friendly swimming around grazing on the rocks .
Quite pleased , just need to get it into better condition with some good feeding .
Also got a nice rainbow Acan head , it arrived couple of days ago , first mail order coral , I've just removed it from its plug and attached it to a rock today . Will take a pic once it resettles .

A pic of the Acan I received a few days ago , it seems to be getting brighter and adding more colour each evening .
