My new tank, cleared up with external filter, getting the testing started in the next few days or so when i buy the kits.

Whilst this tank is cycling is it advisable to get into the habit of water changes or should I just leave it for now, I put carib sea live sand in when i set up so dont want to lose anything from that?

I would get rid of what the external filter collected-using tank water to clean the filter, of course, then replenish with new salt water, unless it's too early to do it.
How long has it been running?

For the cycle dont do any water changes until you see that ammonia can be converted from 2ppm to 0ppm in 24 hours. Once that is complete do a large water change to reduce your Nitrates before adding livestock.

Semiroundel - The external filter as been in for about 12 hours, I intend to keep it going, bought some seachem matrix to put in baskets along with some activated charcoal, i will be just using polyfilter in the other side (cleaning once a week)

Ratvan - Thanks for the info

While it is cycling I would run it with Filter Floss only and bio media so that it polishes your water and removes debris while cycling. Replace the floss regularly (2-3 Days in the beginning) and the external will run great for you

Sorry, that's what I meant but didn't say correctly, just to get the clarified dirt out-with floss as Ratvan says.
