Maybe offer to do a bit of decorating or try the old ..... if I buy you this for xmas can I have a bigger tank ,if she says no then tell her it's the pound shop for her pressie this year , that might work ,

I have space for a 5' tank, but there are a few "non Standard" options that I wouldn't mind trying, however not sure if I want to do a large reef now and worry about moving in next few years and just get something easy like a Boyu TL-450, or even a IM14 if i can find one (not charter house I hate that place)

See what you mean ,it's quite a big upheaval to move a large reef tank ,time consuming, stressful not just for you and moving house but for tank inhabitants and their house to .
Think that's why I like the sort of size I got 180L .easy to maintain, easy to move if need be and don't need to have a massive tank as you know for it to look good ,
End of the day if you design you're tank right and be patient doing it a small tank can look just as stunning as a bigger tank if not better, all good things in small packages that's what the golden rule says ,
But we're all different,we all know what we want so good luck and have what you like ,I'm sure whatever you decide will look great

Take mine for example , love it , the floating rocks were only supposed to be a trial idea just to see what it would look like , I love them , think it's added another dimension to the tank instead of just throwing in some live rock make a pile and hey presto you have a saltwater rockery .  lol lol lol lol lol
No disrespect it works for some but I wanted that something different, some people probably look at mine and say nah don't like it , that's fine , it's my tank not yours and I love it .
Each to their own
I've found that individuallity makes the best tanks , (thank god for spell check on that one  lol ) make it you're own ,don't copy someone else if you can and can't go wrong .

I've seen a few torch corals that I like to be stuck to the floating rocks. was thinking of one of them being one large multi coloured torch rock. That's what I'm looking into at the moment , what different colours are available and making sure they would be ok put together as a mass without stinging the hell out of each other ,
Got a few mad ideas (love a challenge) so watch this space , coming soon to a screen near you , Dave's mad hatters floating rocks .  lol lol lol lol

Thought I was going to lose Percy earlier,
He all of a sudden went mental , swimming back and forward totally flipping out swimming on his side and upside down a few times it was like a remake of top gun but using fish instead of a plane , lol
Poor Doug shit himself and hid in the sand ,think it was more like took cover , lol
I panicked at first didn't know what to think then me 15 years + keeping marines kicked in ,turned everything off and started doing water tests ,everything was coming up fine till got to ph that had dropped a little bit so added seachem four four ,and added some stability just for good measure. I've left everything off for about an hour then turned it all back on apart from lights , will turn them back on tomorrow,
Doing a 10 % water change in a bit .
He's calmed down now .
