I have a problem.  My cleaner shrimps (mainly my two skunks, but also my fire/blood shrimp) are stealing food from my bubble tip nem.  I had to guard it for over an hour last night, after previously guarding it until I couldn't see the piece of lance fish I fed it, only to have the shrimp rip it back out again...twice!

My perc clowns are not showing any interest in the nem, so I'm wondering about getting something to live in the nem and help protect it.  I know of the following options:
1. More agressive breeds of clowns that are more likely to try to live in the nem.  I guesss I'd have to swap out my current percs, but for what?
2. Sexy shrimp.  Would they fight off my agressive skunk cleaner shrimps?
3. Porcelain crabs. Either one or a pair. I've read reports of them fending off cleaner shrimps.

I'm leaning towards option 3, but really love the idea of clowns hosting a nem too.  What would you do?

Option three for me, if you don't want the hassle of catching and replacing the clowns, a pair of porcelain crabs, the purples would look amazing, but the "white" porcelain have such an intricate pattern, they are also beautiful.

another and unsightly option is to put a plasic colinder of some sort over the nem whilst it's feeding.

the sexy shrimp are tiny (aren't they?)

as for the clowns hosting, are you activley trying to get them to host? if so what have you tried?
or.... are you just letting them get on with it?
I should really sort this out!!

If the percula clowns aren't showing an interest anyway, then a Clarkii clown will host the anime fine and shouldn't be any bother. Clarkii will defend the anemone, fend the percs away, and they'll happily sod off.

Sexy shrimp are tiny. The cleaners would likely kick 'em over.

Option 3 sounds best, safest to me. Did you see the video of mine throwing a sharp right hook at my Clarkii?

Although porcelain crabs are more than capable of snapping the cleaners legs off, they don't always sit on top, they sometimes sit underneath the disc holding onto the column. Also, the crab may steal food also.

I had the same problem. I used to feed the whole tank and then feed the nem. As soon as the shrimp started to go towards my nem instead of chasing them off I learnt to entice them away with a bit if food. (I used chopped mussel) every now and then they scanned my Ben but most of the time the nem got the food.

With regards to clowns hosting the nem. Patience I think is the way forward. Took months for my clowns to host. Then overnight they became best friends. I'm very glad I waited and decided to leave them to it as opposed to the and force a connection.

Just my experiences any way.

I've tried putting a couple of different pics facing into the tank of percs hosting bubble tips, but no luck.  Not sure what else to try?

I've read that sometimes they dive right in, sometimes it takes hours/days/weeks/month, and something it just doesn't happen.  I'd planned on just leaving it a few months, and if nothing happened either swapping out my clowns, or getting a porcelain crab (more for interest, and it's supposed to make for a healthier nem).  However, I'm struggling to get food into the nem, so need to do something.

I tried feeding the shrimp a bit of fish each to distract them, but they tended to lose it to a fish or another shrimp and then head straight to the nem.  I tried using an algae clip to hold a bit of fish, which worked well, but after several fish and one shrimp had a go, it vanished pretty quickly.

I've heard sticking pictures of a predator on the side of a tank can help (e.g. a lion fish) but not sure how true this is. for me i loved my clowns and them hosting the nem was a bonus. i didn't force it or do anything something just seemed to click one day. I would say try feeding your nem some smaller items and not a something like a whole lancefish to start with. i used to spray a wad of brine shrimp on my nem then take my turkey baster and entice my shrimp away. then spray a load under a rock and leave them to scavange for it. the trouble i think you have is your shrimp now know when food comes into the tank the nem will be a likely place to get some of that food from. May be worth feeding just them and not the nem to see if the still go and check the nem out after they have finished there fill.

i was tempted to ditch my shrimp after the trouble you're having but now my cowns guard the nem, i don't think i have target fed my nem for over a month now and it just keep getting bigger !!!

chip up chap and keep fighting away those pesky shrimp.

Just watched it.  That's what I was hoping for.  Still tempted by swapping out my percs for clarki clowns too though

Just take em out and cook the lil shits! Lol

One of my clowns sleeps in the nem, and gies over to give it a hard time throughout the day, but the other has now decided the xenia is a bettee place to sleep! And I think it'll stay like that untill I get sone more tank mates.
I should really sort this out!!
