My first and current Marine tank is an Aquael Reefmax. The lighting is integral in the hood (and therefore not customisable) and consists of 3 T5s, which I've found to be totally unsuitable for any sort of coral growth - in fact they just shrivel and die.

My question is, can you get LED strips that would be suitable for coral growth, that fit into T5 fittings or is it an impossibility (as you see I know nothing whatsoever about electrics)?

If not it's onwards and upwards to a Red Sea Reefer!

Had a look on the Aquael site but there's nothing to indicate anything except that they simply consume half the energy of the current tubes, therefore wouldn't fit the bill for what I need.

Something along the lines of the TMC Aquaray tiles and strips are a good compromise when limited for space.

The hood isn't customisable - it has to be something that fits into the current T5 fittings.

Gamechanger - I've now discovered I can remove the hood completely. Aesthetically it won't look great but it will allow me to get a Kessil or similar that I can fix on the rim.

You could look at the Aquatlantis LED units.
