The chap I bought the RSM 130 from told me about Marine 23 aquatics, which is on a small industrial estate in Cheadle Hulme. It's within spitting distance of the Stanley green trading estate where there's a Screwfix I've been using while decorating and fixing my new house.

As I needed salt anyway for this migration to the RSM, I popped down there. It's literally a converted self storage unit, not very elegant at all on the outside, but inside is a different story...

It's relatively new, just over a year old, but with big plans of expansion into the other adjoining storage units. They do have a huge tank with Koi carp for sale which is confusing, and also a decent sized freshwater selection, but it doesn't encroach on the marine side at all, the place is pretty big.

The marine fish are all in appropriately sized tanks, with tiny cubes for tiny fish, but a big selection of weighty Tangs, Angels, etc in a big well lit 'centrepiece' tank up above the smaller tanks around. There's shallow coral tanks with fist sized SPS colonies for £45 or 2 for £80 IIRC.

There's a sofa and small kids area, and as we had our two in tow, we were asked permission, then kids offered sweets, which was a pleasant touch.

They do a great loyalty scheme, where members get a nice credit card like membership card, get 10% of everything. There's something about over £20 as well, but I can't remember that, but got 10% off the Red Sea Coral Pro bucket I bought and separately, got 10% off a £2.99 pack of Mysis Shrimp.

The staff seem genuinely great, you can see true enthusiasm in them, there's not an ounce of 'here for the paycheque'. Not at all pushy, just very approachable and no typical retail bullshit 'is there anything i can help you with today?', just nice guys.

I'll definitely be using them again as they're only 3 miles from me, and since I moved away from the city centre, Oasis, Cockfields etc are now too far to be worth bothering with, plus the loyalty scheme is a genuine great benefit.

Not that it'll benefit me, but they do free delivery on saltwater and/or RO water too within 10 miles, literally as many litres as you need, they have thousand litre tanks on a trailer.

A young company doing everything right deserves every bit of positive reviewage it can get, and people on the 'net generally only ever leave negative reviews, so thought worthwhile leaving a bit of an intro for them combined with an overview of a positive experience.

For a look around;

(no this wasn't paid for in anyway lol I even invited them here, the guy wrote the link down but they've not arrived yet, but are welcome)

Thanks again for this, visited at weekend and was glad I did, will definitely be going back. It's one of the cleanest places I've seen and very well stocked, prices very reasonable compared to the garden centres too  :glad:

Yep, I got a membership card thanks, and my first couple of stamps on my loyalty card too  :glad:

I've noticed the loyalty scheme seems quite popular in marine, I'll definitely be getting a few more stamps from here though.

Did it seem clean to you? My wife couldn't get over how clean the tanks all were, probably after staring at mine for a few weeks

I went to another place for the first time on Sunday and it was the complete opposite, dirty tanks and some of them so small you felt sorry for the stuff in them  :'(

It depends what the LFSs you're used to are like I suppose. There's Manchester Pets & Aquatics opposite the Manchester Apollo, that's more of a pet shop, but does have freshwater and marine, and those tanks are all a bit crap.

Oasis is nice and cleanly kept, as is Abyss, but probably not as much as Marine 23.

Those small cube tanks they have are all individual tanks and not attached to anything, so once their stock sells, or if the tank gets dirty they can just take the little tank and clean it easily with a brush in warm water to get in all corners, etc. I don't know if that's how they do it, but it'd make sense given that they aren't attached and are very modular.

I've been trying to visit all of the LFSs within range recently  This is probably the best stocked fish wise I've seen, I did really well to come out of there without a pair of clowns  :glad:

In Manchester just Urmston Aquatics and the garden centres, although they're not really Manchester I guess, e.g Wilmslow. Then; not sure if you've heard of blakemere village? there's aquaworld over nr Chester, aquahome up the M6 nr Preston. There's a place in Crewe called river and reef, there's a place a bit further south of Crewe called a-z aquatics. I might have forgotten one or two but they're the main places I've been, some of them more than once  :glad:

Ah, you do travel around! I tend to see 10 miles out to Cockfields as a good trip! I like to find a good one and stick with it, that way you build trust, benefit from any loyalty schemes better and build a rapport with the staff.

I'll stick to Marine 23 now I've moved to the area unless there's special reason to travel to another.

Oasis and cockfields farm used to be my main LFSs. If you've not been they're worth checking out if you're in the area again.

Yep, definitely wrt loyalty etc, I've been trying to find my very own LFS to stick with and marine 23 has just jumped to the top of the list for sure :)

There's reasons some of the others aren't too bad as I've been after work etc so it's not a 40 mile trip just for the fish, but obviously the closer to home the better really. It's 30 mins to marine 23 and I head over that way a fair bit anyway :)

Only minor downside is it's going to cost me a trip to tk Max and now home sense every time we go  :glad:
