Hey mate, is your test kit in date? was it an accurate test?

Hi yes it was an api 5in1 strip kit expires 12/2021 I just wanted to see how there ph was compared to mine and noticed the strip for nitrate was pretty much off the chart for nitrate 200+ nitrite was between 3 and 5 salt level was 7.5 kH was 40 and GH Was  180

Was the fish swimming normally in the shop? How is it now? All I will say is those strip test are notoriously unreliable. Api or salifert will give you a more exact reading of your tank water.

They were fine in the shop and there looking a lot more alive in my tank just abit curious as to why it had such a high nitrate on my test strip I’m gonna order a better test kit now just didn’t want to wake up tommorow with dead fish cause of the shock of my water compared to there’s  thank you

High nitrate is normal for a lot of LFS water,  I think they just don't have quite enough liverock for the volume of fish so it grows over time.

40ppm carbonate hardness is equivalent to 2.2dKH which is very low.

Did you check the salinity of the water? The dKH could be partly low because it's mixed at lower salinity, and partly because (IIRC) alkalinity gets used up in the nitrogen cycle (or a byproduct of the cycle reacts with it or something).

Never add the water from the bag you purchase you're fish in into you're tank always net the fish out ,
And I agree those tests can and have been known to give false readings ,

I use these tests to give me a quick indication, see a potential problem then the other tests come out.

Note, you can cut the strip in half, thus getting two tests for the price of one (I am from Yorkshire!!)

That's typical Yorkshire lad that is ,
That's why Yorkshire tea is a bit stronger too so you can dry each bag out on the line and re-use for a 2nd cup ,
 lol lol lol lol lol
(Only joking )  lol lol
Good idea though about cutting the strip in half .
