Hi my tank has been running nearly a year and I now have some mushrooms & palythoa which grew out of the live rock a few weeks ago. I’ve had a look online to see the best starter corals are but wondered what you guys thought was best for a novice?

240litre
4 green chromis
Chalk goby
4 hermits
15 snails (all reef safe)
2 peppermint shrimp
Emerald crab
Thanks in advance

Most soft corals are good starters. Try some zoas. They add a lot of colour, are pretty cheap, and very hardy. You could also look at toadstools, kenya trees (they can spread, so pick up lose branches).

Thank you I’m just researching the best dip method before they arrive. Some sites recommend certain solutions whereas some say to dip in fresh RO water. Interested in your experience?
I’ve ordered a blueberry fields forever, and an alpha & omega zoa for a good colour mix.

I've used Lugol's Iodine, and mix it so it looks like weak tea. Seems to work - I've found a few parasites on the corals I've had. I also QT them for 10+ weeks in a small 20L tank on my desk. No fish in that tank, so it's the same as a fishless cycle to stop any ich, velvet, and various other parasites that could come in on a coral or other invert (snails, shrimps, crabs, anemones, starfish, etc.)

This is a good video, discussing a lot of the things you should consider:

Excellent informative video. I think I now have everything I need in preparation. I have ordered 2 small frags from jbsmarines.co.uk so will follow all your advice plus what I’ve learnt online and take it slow. Many thanks again HK FUEY.

Jbs have sent me some nice frags in the past couple of months. It's a shame online ordering is better for me. I'd love to support my LFS but the £ they ask is crazy
