Hello All

never really come onto forums to discuss anything
but feel like i should do

just starting my marine tank up again
its been a couple of months cycling
and the rock scape has gone very very brown
worse than i have ever seen before

was told by my local aquarist shop
to use N03 P04 treatment

as my nitrate was 15 by the card

this morning the tank has gone very cloudy ( you cant see in it )

can someone advise what i have done wrong

the tank is about 465 litres

so i put in 15 ml

and i am supposed to do this every day

Hi, @Turbonetuk Welcome to ReefBase.

What treatment is it you've used? Nitrate and phosphate treatment sounds brill, but which product specifically?

What colour is the cloudiness? If it's white/milky, it'll be a bacterial bloom, if it's green, algae bloom, post some pictures if you can.

Is there any livestock? Was it live rock, or dead live rock, artificial rock, etc.

 :glad:

Hello Mike

it wont let me attach pictures

but the stuff i am using is Red Sea algae management
it is milky white

the tank is cycling so no fish at the moment

it was live rock i had in the garage being heated for a few months
but when i did my tank up again
i washed it all off to do my rock scape in the tank then added water

so dead live rock

the tank was fine yesterday not cloudy at all just the brown rocks

added the  red sea stuff and this morning could not even see the rocks

earlier i added some seachem clarity to see if that would cure it .but no

should i still add another dose of the red sea as that's supposed to be done every day apparently

Roger

Hi mate

I’ve had success with NoPox in the past, but dosing without really understanding the whole process behind it… I just wanted rid of GHA at the time.. it did work for me but more by luck I think.. than me actually understand the how, what and why.

It wasn’t a particularly quick process either, but I’ve often been told things may become a problem overnight in this hobby but the solution won’t always come as quick.

I used the guidance on the box of 1-2ml per 100L every 24 Hours… I was always told it was strong treatment so air on side of caution.. lower dosage to start!

A recent attempt to use it on a new tank resulted in me wiping out a load of softies.

Re Clarity I would avoid adding to many treatments to the tank.. I really do believe less is more, you want your tank water to be as close to natural sea water as possible.. although clarity is a good product I wouldn’t necessarily use it in these circumstances.

I might be barking up the wrong tree but I don’t think you can put a price on a good water change (although shamefully i don’t do as many as I probably should!) filter wool will also assist greatly.

Good luck either way, I’m sure you can also reach out to Red Sea directly who I’m sure will assist with the more technical side of things!

Good luck!

Al

Hello .

thank you for your comments ,much appreciated

it did start to clear a bit late last night

but i had to add some more treatment in ( as you are supposed to do it every day )

this morning very cloudy again

do you think i also need to remove the filter sock

that's getting very dirty ,but a different dirty

like the treatment is all getting trapped in there and not circulating

i have never had this kind of problem when i had my same marine tank a couple of years ago

Morning mate,

Personally if your seeing stuff form in filter sock I’d rinse it out, others may disagree.

Hopefully someone else can chip in with stronger knowledge on the treatment.. I’ve never had tank go cloudy from using it.

Maybe reduce dosage slightly?

I'd remove the filter sock for now personally, it'll just keep clogging. Tanks can run perfectly fine without mechanical filtration anyway. I'd just do my best to increase aeration and flow until it passes.
