I think either of the last two would work, but personally I would go with this design out of the two.  It's a lot easier to add a baffle than to cut one out and get all the old silicone off so you can put the new one in water tight...

Minor point but I think your water heights are wrong in the pic,  and you might want to move the heater to the first chamber where the water height is constant, rather than the one where the pump is which will drop with evaporation.
I think with the return running it will end up with the water heights at the pink line, the first two are static due to the weirs and the return section can fluctuate (hence heater could be exposed to air if its in there)

Yeah that does make more sense doesn’t it? I would still like to use floss/foam pad though instead of filter sock (purely because of the babba fish issue) but not sure its going to work too well :/ i could add another baffle (so two new ones now) i suppose so i can stick floss in before the other medias and would stop babies flowing over the top edge of the first section. But i know i really must be careful of it overflowing from blockages.

Sorry not sure I understand 100%. The last design i drew I did rotate it 180º compared to the first design. Do you say this because the taller baffle would be the first one for the water to pass over? Thanks

Sorry missed that.
I thought the flow works best left to right so if you swap the sump round you won’t need to change any baffles

I don’t know i feel like they’ll get wooshed into it so quick they will suffer? Or do you think they’ll be fine if i get a larger sock so they don’t hit the sides too fast?

Ah I see. Not sure if it's any help but I know you can get bigger socks. Would think the water movement in there would be slow enough that they'd be fine?

I think they're 7 inch opposed to 4 inch which is the normal size.  I bought one by accident once in eBay, they look like a Corona mask for a horse lol.

I don't particularly get on with filter socks so use media baskets with some biological media in the bottom and half filled with stuffing they use for cushions / toys etc (when dirty just take out vthrow away and replace). You could put carbon in the bottom if you so wished

Thanks:

Could you put a fry net box under the inlet rather than a filter sock?

That’s an idea. I could see the babies in there too

IF you guys had to choose… Would you go for more space in the return pump section or more space in the inlet section (baring in mind it will still have a large middle chamber which could house the skimmer if converted to marine in the future)?
