Just a quick heads up for anyone struggling to control nitrate in their tank, vinegar dosing is the business!

Due to some snails dying and lying undiscovered my nitrate level was well over 50, up from its normal level of 5-15. This resulted in poo-brown corals and a massive nuisance algae bloom.  :(

I started  following this guide and the results have been pretty decent. Not only did it get the nitrate down to its original level, but also took it to <1 which I have never seen in this tank. Corals are starting to show some colour again  :tongue-love:

I'll probably drop the dose a bit more now the nitrate level is close to 0.

Thanks:

Excellent news, and evidence!  I've been looking at this too, as for the first time I have rising nitrate in my DT.

Thanks:

I'd read that article, but not the ones it links to at the bottom.

This thread is particularly interesting, as it compares carbon sources, with vinegar coming out on top:
Interesting article regarding current knowlege of anammox bacteria & the biochemistry - Reef Central Online Community

I'll post this in the other thread comparing phosphate media, as I think it's relevant to that discussion too.

I was interested in that you seemed not to dose vinigar daily, do you find this better than daily. I like your results, thank you for sharing your experience 🙂

Hi @arbarnes  Welcome to ReefBase

You're welcome but actually the data in my picture is a bit misleading! Because it only shows changes to the dose,  when what it's meant to be showing is how many ml were dosed daily.  So it should really be:

4th Feb 2ml,
5th Feb 5ml,
6th Feb 5ml
7th Feb 5ml,
8th Feb 5ml,
9th Feb 5ml,
10th Feb 5ml
11th Feb 8ml,
12th Feb 8ml,
13th Feb 8ml,
14th Feb 8ml,
...

Thank you so much for your reply that makes more sense.

What size tank is this on?

I am trying Vinigar but at very low levels to try and keep my hair algee in check.

Have been dosing every other day against Microbactor 7 but am thinking that instead of doublinbg the dose of making the same dose daily and putting in the Microbactor at night because they sugest turning off the skimmer which is not a great idea when doseing a carbon source.

I am greatful for others experiances but I struggle with critical responces because of my Autistic spectrum condition and for this reason I keep at arms legnth from online forums because when I have got Involved in forums in the past it has been difficult for me to keep a ballanced aproach to them.

Thanks again

You're welcome,  unfortunately I haven't used Microbacter so I can't give any suggestions on that combination directly.

What are you nitrate and phosphate measurements at the moment?  Maybe you could start a thread regarding your algae issue with pics etc? That would help people give the right advice 😊👍
