i been trying to find out how long these pellets can last before replacing them or can anyone recommend a good alternative

depends on the system they are in. As with any type of dosing ( Vodka, Vinegar etc ) test for nitrate and phosphates is your best indicator!

The issue with pellets vs dosing is they slowly wear down, meaning you start off strong, then slowly reduce the denitrifying effect.  Not sure if you can simply keep topping them up, or have to clear out the old, and replace with new (anyone use them, care to comment?).

The idea is to top them up as they break down. Enough flow to make them bubble/hover around, but not enough to tumble as tumbling causes them to break up. Not enough flow causes them to clump, which doesn't work! Start off with less than needed and slowly build up. The correct dosage right away causes complete chaos!
