Hi all

I'd like your opinion please...

My tank is 4x2x2, and I'm looking to upgrade my lights to LEDs - yet another dumb newbie who listened to the lfs, and didn't research first.  I bought 6xT5s, and I recon I'll get my money back within two years by buying LEDs.

I'm pretty sure I'm going for 2x 120w Maxspect Razors.

What I'm thinking is, do I need the bars, or could I fit them front to back?  I've seen others do this.  What are the pros/cons?  Also, I have a pelmet (is that the right word?) around the top front and sides, so it would be able to 'grip' the back edge of the glass, but would just have to rest on the lip inside the front.

Hi, HK.

You won't be able to fit them front to back, as the light spread is setup so that it spreads out wider widthways, than front to back, as tanks are generally longer than they are deep. If you fitted them front to back you'd probably get dark areas in the middle and either side, and have blinding bright spots on the front and rear glass that'll quickly cover up with algae and constantly need cleaning with a magnet cleaner.

The link bars are good, and while they're expensive for what they are, you won't regret buying them. I have them linking my two 160W razors, and it's not strong enough so that you only need to support the left and right of the now joined unit, I still need to support them in the middle. The bars are only designed for the 120W though, the 160W razor is too long for them to be strong enough.

Looking at your tank, it's similar to mine, I have the Razor's legs on the left and right glass brace, then I've just got a plastic thing in the middle on that middle brace to support them in the middle to avoid sagging.

I'll take a picture of my setup if that'd help?

I follow you.  Bars it is then.  I'll see how they are and decide whether to follow you on the centre support of whether I can leave it (that'll just be if it's pretty strong, for aesthetics).

Here, HK, I knew I saw a picture of the Razors mounted front to back, see the light spread issue? The hot spots?

It's not, it's just some big leather. It needs to go in my opinion, it's not attractive enough to take such a dominant position...

So does that massive green plating monti far right...

What am I doing criticising, it's a stunning tank lol

I see what you mean.  Pretty set on two 120s the right way around now.  Probably ordering when I get back from a long weekend in Edinburgh.
