Hey guys.... sorry if this is a really silly question but how do I know when to empty the skimmer collection cup? Do I do it when I can see it’s dirty? It’s been running all this time and only collects clear water, does it still need emptying?

Empty it when full, otherwise it will just overflow and empty waste back in sump. I would expect it to be a dark colour and smelly, maybe adjust the air in flow so that it takes longer to fill up (skim dryer)?

Okay thank you! Yeah I’ve been trying to get it to skim drier. It never seems to fill up and the water is always clear. Maybe it’ll get better as the tank matures

Your first few weeks u may find it will run clear as your bacteria etc will take caste of most of the rubbish, try keep it running a bit dryer so it’s mainly thick foam running into the cup and u will start noticing a difference in the smell and colour. I accidentally left my overflow tap on my cup open and it overflowed out of my external chamber and soaked my carpet, the smell is not great in my house right now

Oooo nooo try a strong enzyme based cleaner, the ones you get in pet shops for pet urine stains etc. They really break down biological matter and deodorise. There’s a foaming one by Simple Solutions which is really good, I know you can’t use air fresheners around aquariums.
