This is a really stupid question but ...  getting very confused with reading about nitrate levels - they should ideally be less than 1.0?  My test kit goes from 0 - 160.  Is that 0 - 16.0?  My nitrates were at 5.0 on my card yesterday so is that 0.5 or 5 ???

5 will be 5ppm which could be better but is not horrific (mine is currently 25 uuurrghhh!)
I would suggest next time you go for a kit like Salifert that does both high and low range and can give a more accurate result.

Yep, that'll be 5ppm.  You want to keep it very low, so less than that pale orange and you should be fine.

Thanks - I will test it again tomorrow - if it still at 5, should I do a water change to try and reduce it down?
