My son has a hermit crab in his nano which has fluff / fur growing on it with fine tentacles / spines growing.  I have only been able to find this article on it but does anyone know anything about it / any action needed?  Cant get a photo at the moment as he is at work but will try and get one later. ?? We'd need a picture, marine life is far too diverse.

It could be hair algae, if there's no or few other hermits to clean it's shell.

Although not a hermit, decorator crabs stick all kinds of rubbish to themselves.

Pom Pom crabs have tentacles on the ends of their arms, they're actually tiny Anemones it carries around as boxing gloves.

See if you can get a picture, I'm curious to see what it is now.

Have sent him the thread and will see if I can get a pic but he said it looked like the pic in the article and described it initially as looking like a dandelion - the ones you blow all the whispy bits (used to call them fairies) - hope you are enjoying my descriptions  lol lol

I am wondering if it could be the frag of my pulsing xenia I gave him that didn't survive / went missing - could it attach to his shell?

One of mine use to look like that but the Kole tang sucked it all off it had the hermit on the sandbed one night and it took cover inside it's shell while the Kole proceeded to give him a good valet been spangly since.

@Debbiem I would say as per article then hydroids but there is several types if it was me I would pull Mr hermit out and plonk him in a bowl of water taken from the tank and give his shell a good scrub with an toothbrush get it all off as some species of hydroids can be very evasive and take over a tank.

Sadly I think it's on the verge of a crash I've tried my hardest done a 400L waterchange today and added loads of carbon so not like I have not tried.

If it crashes I don't know where I will go from there I think I may be on a murder charge on the CEO of TMC !!!
